Levenshulme village in the heart of Manchester’s creative corridor will celebrate its eleventh annual community festival which starts on Friday 23 October and runs to Sunday 8 November. Up to 10,000 people are expected to enjoy the two week party which includes just over one hundred events. The festival is funded by a grant from the city council and the generous support of local traders. Some two hundred performers will take part in its Arts programme and Manchester City council Sports development team will be running a special free childrens half term sports week.
Festival President Lawrence Hennigan said “The festival is now established as the city’s longest running community celebrations. It is a celebration of everything that is good about the suburb. As well as an Arts programme involving Art, Dance, Literature, Music, and Poetry, there are over fifty Health and Fitness events for adults and children. Most of the events in the festival are free and we want to see as many people out and about in the village joining in the festivities and getting to know their neighbours.”
Levenshulme’s community radio station ALL FM 96.9 is the official media partner of this years 2009 Levenshulme Community Festival. A special live broadcast will take place in M19 on Friday 23 October at 6pm to launch the two week party.
Major highlights include the festivals annual outdoor party and fireworks display on Monday 2 November at Cringle Fields. The free event which also includes a massive funfair and a host of live entertainment attracts over 5,000 visitors.
Musical highlights include a launch party by Levenshulme singer songwriter, Clare Mooney, plus a Bob Dylan Festival and Beatles Festival as well a special Family Irish night and an abundance of other live music events.
Forget the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, Levenshulme is going one stage further and staging its own dance festival where visitors can come along and have a go themselves at everything from Ballroom to Street Dance and everything in between.
Literature highlights include a special book launch by Levenshulme writer Steve Wood who writes about his childhood memories about growing up in the 1970’s in the area. Levenshulme Library is staging its own World War time Literature Festival featuring work by local writers and Isis Café is staging a series of special Poetry nights.
Art plays a major role in the festival with Bankley Art studio staging a special exhibition called, Beautiful women with Depression, by renown local artist Andrew Gilmore during the two weeks of the festival.
